Electrical tape is fully known as polyvinyl chloride electrical insulating adhesive tape, also referred to as electrician's insulating tape or insulating tape. Electrical tape is suitable for insulating various resistive parts. Generally, there are 3 types of electrician's insulating tape: one is insulating black tape, the second is PVC electrical flame-retardant tape, and the third is high-voltage self-adhesive tape, each with its own function. When purchasing electrical insulating tape, how do you determine its quality?
Insulating black tape
It only has insulation function, but it is neither flame-retardant nor waterproof. It has gradually been phased out, and only some people still use it in civil building electrical applications.

PVC electrical flame-retardant tape
It has three functions: insulation, flame retardancy, and waterproofing. However, due to its PVC material, its extensibility is poor, so it cannot wrap joints very tightly, and its waterproofing is not ideal, but it is now widely used.
High-voltage self-adhesive tape
Generally used for higher voltage levels. Due to its good extensibility, it performs better in waterproofing than the second type, so people also apply it in low-voltage fields. However, because its strength is not as good as PVC electrical flame-retardant tape, these two are usually used together.
Identifying electrical tape quality
First, check the appearance for defects, whether the tape is rewound smoothly, if there are burrs after slitting, and if it's smooth. Look at the tape material (there are many types of electrical insulating tape, so I won't introduce the judgment of good and bad materials one by one; in most cases, it still depends on the use case).
Next, look at the adhesive. Most adhesives have now evolved towards environmental friendliness. The smell is very important; if it's pungent, there's a higher possibility it's a substandard product (not referring to all tapes). Also, check if the tape sticks back when pulled for use, and if there's residual adhesive when peeled off after use. If there's residual adhesive on the product, this is a fatal flaw for substandard tape.
Notes: PVC material is basically similar; the key is the adhesive. After a period of time, if you unwrap poor-quality tape, you might see the adhesive separating from the PVC material, looking sticky and uncomfortable. Good quality tape will not have this problem.
