Do you really understand electrician's tape, which is often used?

The full name of electrician's tape is polyvinyl chloride electrical insulating tape, also known as insulating tape or electrician's tape. Electrician's tape is suitable for the insulation of various electrical resistance components. There are generally three types of insulating tapes: insulating black tape, PVC flame-retardant electrical tape, and high-voltage self-adhesive tape. Each of these three tapes has its own function. In the selection and purchase of electrical insulating tape, how to determine the quality of the electrical insulating tape?
1. Insulating black tape
It only has insulation function, not flame retardant or waterproof, and is now gradually being eliminated. It is only still used in the electrical systems of some residential buildings.
2. PVC flame-retardant tape
It has three functions: insulation, flame retardancy, and waterproofing. However, because it is made of PVC material, it has poor ductility, cannot be wrapped tightly, and its waterproofing is not ideal. However, it has been widely used.
3. High-voltage self-adhesive tape
Generally used for high-voltage applications. Due to its good ductility, it is superior to the second type of PVC flame-retardant tape in terms of waterproofing. Therefore, it is also used in low-voltage applications. However, because its strength is not as good as that of PVC flame-retardant tape, these two types of tapes are usually used in combination.
Identifying the quality of electrician's tape
First, check the appearance for any defects, whether the winding is worn, whether the cut edges are frayed, and whether it is smooth (there are various types of electrical insulating tapes, the quality of the materials will not be introduced one by one, and in most cases it also depends on the usage).
Then look at the adhesive. Now most adhesives have evolved into environmentally friendly ones. The smell is important. If it is very pungent, there may be defects in the product (not all tapes). Check whether there is any resistance to sticking during the use of the tape, and whether there is any adhesive residue after tearing it off. If there is adhesive residue on the product, this is a fatal flaw of defective tape.
Note: The PVC material is basically the same, mainly looking at the adhesive. For inferior tapes, after wrapping for a period of time and then loosening, you can see the separation of the adhesive and the PVC material, which looks sticky and uncomfortable. High-quality tapes will not have this problem.
In short, whether it is insulating black tape, PVC flame-retardant electrical tape, or high-voltage self-adhesive tape, they all have different advantages and characteristics. The most important thing is to choose high-quality, safe, and stable products to ensure your own and others' safety while achieving good construction results.
