Insulated rubber tape specifically refers to the tape used by electricians to prevent leakage and provide insulation. Also known as insulating tape, it consists of a base tape and a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer. The base tape is generally made of cotton cloth, synthetic fiber fabrics, and plastic films, while the adhesive layer is made of rubber and tackifying resins, resulting in good adhesion and excellent insulation properties. Insulated tape has good insulation, voltage resistance, flame retardancy, and weather resistance, making it suitable for wire connections, electrical insulation, and heat insulation protection.
Insulated tape is widely used in electrical work for wrapping, joining, and insulating and sealing conductors used at voltages below 380V. There are two production methods: the wiping method and the coating method. Manufacturing process: Using polyvinyl chloride film as the base material, coated with rubber-type pressure-sensitive adhesive. Electrical insulating adhesive tape, commonly known as electrician's tape (hereinafter referred to as insulating tape), is a special adhesive tape used for insulation in electrical wiring. In the past, cloth-type insulating adhesive tape, i.e., black insulating tape, was used in electrical circuits, with its base material being fabric impregnated with insulating material. With the advancement of science and technology and economic development, various types of insulating tapes have emerged, but the most common ones are polyvinyl chloride and polyolefin insulating tapes.
During the use of electricity, people pay attention to the influence of the cross-sectional area of the power cord material on the safe use of electricity, but often do not pay enough attention to the use of insulating tape on the joints. Power line laying is becoming increasingly complex, including under wooden floors, in walls, partitions, and in damp underground or underwater areas. Improper use of insulating tape can lead to leakage and endanger personal safety. Therefore, we must use insulating tape correctly. Power cord joints are divided into '+' type, '-' type, and 'T' type connections. The joints should be tightly wound and smooth without burrs. Otherwise, before the wire end breaks, gently press it with wire cutters, then wrap it to the crimping point, and then swing it left and right. The wire end will break very neatly at the joint. If the joint is in a dry place, first wrap it with 2 layers of black insulating tape, then 2 layers of plastic tape, then stretch the self-adhesive insulating tape by about 200%, wrap it 2-3 layers, and finally wrap it with 2 layers of plastic tape.
The disadvantages of using plastic tape directly are numerous: plastic tape is prone to displacement and delamination over time; when the electrical load is heavy, the joint heats up, and the plastic tape is prone to melting and shrinkage; when the power joints are squeezed together in the junction box, and when there are burrs on the joints, it is easy to puncture the plastic tape, etc. These hidden dangers will directly endanger personal safety, cause short circuits, and cause fires. However, using black insulating tape will not cause the above situations. It has a certain strength and flexibility, can be tightly wrapped around the joint for a long time, and will be firmly fixed due to the influence of time and temperature, and will not fall off, and it is also flame-retardant. Furthermore, wrapping with black insulating tape and then wrapping with plastic tape can prevent moisture and rust. Of course, self-adhesive insulating tape also has its drawbacks. Although it has good waterproof performance, it is easy to break, so it needs to be wrapped with 2 layers of plastic tape as a protective layer. The self-adhesive insulating tape between joints does not stick to each other, resulting in better performance.
The project "Research on the Synergistic Effect and Online Technology of Multi-component Special Functional Tapes" undertaken by the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, recently passed the appraisal organized by the Jilin Provincial Science and Technology Department. This research result uses low-cost auxiliary materials and reasonable processing technology to fully exert the synergistic effect of each component, which is innovative. The developed special functional composite tape has reached the advanced level of international similar products in terms of comprehensive performance. With the development and progress of modern industry, the requirements for sealed insulating tape products are getting higher and higher. At present, the functional tapes produced in China are single-functional and low-performance, far from meeting the needs of engineering, and the domestic market has been monopolized by foreign composite tapes. In order to meet the needs of the domestic tape market, in 2015, the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry undertook the project "Research on the Synergistic Effect and Online Technology of Multi-component Special Functional Tapes". By optimizing materials and controlling the parameters and processing conditions of multi-component and multi-phase systems, the synergistic effect and online effect of materials are achieved, effectively integrating functional design, structural design, characteristic design, and processing technology to develop multifunctional composite tapes with excellent performance. The adhesive layer of this new type of special functional tape is made of IIR and fly ash as the main raw materials, which is a self-adhesive insulating and waterproof adhesive. Not only are the materials easily available and low in cost, but the sealing and insulation performance is also good. The backing material is made of EPDM and related additives, and has flame-retardant, anti-corrosion, insulating, and aging-resistant functions. The elongation at break is around 200%. By wrapping and overlapping the two ends by 1/3, and pinching the ends together, the sealing effect can be achieved. This tape can be used for connecting overhead insulated lines in urban networks, branch line clamps, and places where open flames are prohibited in mines, oil fields, and chemical power integrated facilities. It can also be used for joint processing of various low-voltage cables in harsh environments, and for waterproof, anti-corrosion, flame-retardant, and insulation protection of tunnel cables.
